Such is certainly the case for sweet Miss Averie! Here is one of my favorites from her newborn session... Fast forward 6 months, and I was thrilled to capture Averie's 6 month milestone!! She has not only grown bigger and, if it's even possible- MORE beautiful, but is also so attentive, mobile, communicative, curious, and has the sweetest, calmest personality. And those big blue eyes definitely captivated me! We had contemplated a few fun outdoor locations for this 6 month milestone session, but ultimately decided to do the session in their beautiful ended up being the perfect choice! Sessions in the home are magical...there is comfort in the home, real life unfolds, and interactions happen naturally. The [O] family have an adorable nursery, stunning hardwood floors, and lots of awesome natural light to work with, too! If you haven't considered your home as an option for your session, I encourage you to do so!! I seriously could not get over Averie's cuteness!! Her sweet toes and the way she plays with them, her perfect little lips, big blue eyes, rolls for days, chubby much to LOVE!! No wonder she is so adored by her loving mommy & daddy! THANK YOU, [O] family, for inviting me into your home! It was awesome to capture some sweet moments with your family...and not that I want Averie to grow any faster than she is, I look forward to documenting more milestones in the future!

XOXO ~Amber

Self Discovery I have been mulling over my thoughts for quite some time now, and I am finally ready to attempt to put those thoughts into words. This might be winded, but stay with me, I promise it will be worth the read...

I LOVE being a photographer.

My dad bought me my first SLR camera for a college course in 2000...a Pentax film camera I treasured. Not long after, I started photographing for friends because I "had a nice camera" LOL! Fast forward 17 years and here I am today.

The past couple of years, I've found myself experiencing burn out. Part of that burn out was, inevitably due to being extremely busy, staying booked solid and trying to juggle being a mom and wife on top of the business. I realize now that the physical burn out was simply camouflaging my deeper emotional burn out. I would find myself frustrated at the success of other photographers. Appalled at some of the images I'd encounter in Facebook groups that colleagues would swoon over (even if it WAS out of or oops?? and I won't even get into my feelings on the line that SOME boudoir photography crosses into being pornographic). Confused by debates over is brand new, why should SHE be charging THAT much // well we ALL have to start SOMEWHERE // but that's devaluing our profession // charge what you're worth // but I can't get clients to book at that price // etc, etc,etc...

I had been content with my definition of success, staying busy working with clients that I love...but there was something missing. Why am I not being noticed? Why is my work not good enough?

I've done some humble soul searching and I finally feel like I'm at peace after these last couple of years. My "AHA!!" moment happened at a photography convention just a few short weeks ago. I had an awesome time with a few really wonderful colleague friends...we had lots of laughs, silly moments, ate good food, made some fun memories, and became closer as friends. We also had great discussions, and some things stood out to me.

I will share a couple of those experiences and then explain the LIGHTBULB that has changed my perspective...

1) One of my friends wanted to listen to a certain speaker at one of the vendors' booths at the expo. The speaker was someone she admired, quite successful and well-known, but very young. We listened to the presentation for a bit, when another friend decided to leave. I admittedly wasn't engaged with the speaker, so I left too. My friend (who is around my age, with similar experience as a photographer and business owner) fumed, "I am TIRED of being lectured by 20 -year-olds!!"

2) After waiting in line for almost an hour, we got great seats to listen to a very well-known presenter. I was STOKED to hear her words of wisdom. I started recording the audio on my phone so I could listen to it later, because certainly this talk was going to be full of earth-shattering information. Then, I listened. And waited. And listened some more. Waited some more. Waited for IT, the big wave of information that was going to inspire me or change my business. And it never came. About halfway through the presentation, I turned my audio recorder off and just checked out mentally. I just did NOT connect with this speaker in the least bit...yet so many others DID, including some friends I was with. SO, as we walked back to our hotel, we got into a great discussion. One comment has stayed with good friend said, "the photography world is EVOLVING."

3) Another speaker, whom I follow, adore, and am very inspired by...reiterated a fact that I had heard before. "Your clients don't know a GREAT image from a GOOD one." She shared an experience that she had while on a live television show. She had been asked to be on the show to teach viewers how to photograph their pets. She blatantly admitted to us (not the producer of the show) that she had NO experience, had NEVER photographed an animal before. She would be taking the photos and they would be instantaneously viewed on a large monitor by the entire audience. Nervous about her inexperience as a pet photographer, she was reassured by someone that told her- after taking the picture, just look at the monitor and say "THAT is a good picture!" So she did just that. She photographed a cat, and after pressing the shutter button, did not even LOOK at the monitor, just pointed to the picture she had just taken and exclaimed, "Now THAT is a good picture!!" The cat owner was moved to joyful tears, the audience applauded.

"I am TIRED of being lectured by 20 -year-olds!!"

"the photography world is EVOLVING."

"Your clients don't know a GREAT image from a GOOD image."

The days and weeks since the convention have passed. I took away so much knowledge and inspiration from many classes and speakers. I am grateful to have attended. I will always have much to learn and I hope to constantly be growing as an artist and business owner...after all, that is part of the fun.

AND...I finally pin-pointed the cause of my emotional burn out. I will never claim to know everything, but I had spent years working on my craft. I had learned my camera, understood light and how to manipulate my camera's settings to expose an image properly as well as, creatively and artistically. I had invested time and money researching and purchasing better camera bodies and lenses. I was thrilled that I had discovered MY STYLE and was able to shoot with technical precision (again, not perfection!) and with creativity and passion. Through experience, I had gotten very good at eliciting emotion from my clients, setting the stage to create beautiful images for my clients that would capture their real life stories.

But what was I missing? How could these "20-year-olds" be getting noticed with so little experience...and for SOME, (in my eyes..because let's face it, "art" is subjective) so little skill. SOCIAL MEDIA. Social media has changed photography. ANYONE can become a "professional" photographer. Anyone can post an image (and make it look relatively good), and with some serious hustling, get hundreds of "likes" and "followers" (and hopefully, clients in turn) which is something I HAD NEGLECTED. I had spent my time mastering my craft, but had neglected my BRAND.

I am here to tell you that I LOVE BEING A PHOTOGRAPHER...and not a GOOD photographer, but a GREAT photographer. I HOPE that my clients DO notice that my images are GREAT, that they are technically sound and align with my style, NOT THAT THEY SIMPLY LOOK GOOD ON SOCIAL MEDIA OR HAVE HUNDREDS AND THOUSANDS OF "LIKES!"

That being said, I am committed to building my brand. I will stand shoulder to shoulder with "these 20-year-olds" who have mastered social media and grown their businesses. If you are one of those 20-year-olds, KUDOS to you...but PLEASE if you haven't already, put in the time and work to master your craft as well. Continue not only growing your social media, but also your skills to become a GREAT photographer. And to those "seasoned" (do not read" OLD!) photographers like me, do not be discouraged. It is never too late to learn and master new things, even social media. As you stretch and grow, your business and your brand can and will grow to new heights.

If you're still with me, THANK YOU. Maybe you're where I was in my profession, stagnant and unfulfilled. Maybe you are killing it on social media but haven't found your style or purpose. Maybe you are thinking of a starting your photography business. In any case, I hope that I was able to connect, uplift, or inspire even one of you.

AND, if not...I will leave you with {THIS}

~XOXO Amber

Littleton, Colorado Family Session // Outdoor Fun with the [B] Family After my time with the wonderful [B] family, I was once again reminded why I love photography. I have been so blessed to document moments with this family a few times over the last handful of years and each time, it has brought me joy. What I loved most about this particular session, besides my gorgeous subjects of course, was our location. It may not look like anything fancy...after all, despite the warm weather we've had, it's still February and here in Colorado that means barren trees and brown crunchy grass. However, Michelle had thoughtfully chosen this location. It has a place in her heart, she explained to me, because when her children were little she used to walk them to this open space near their home, spread a blanket next to a giant tree, on top of a hill that overlooked the mountains, and read books to them.

Even though they didn't read books to each other this time, I hope I was able to recreate some of the special magic that this place holds for them.

THAT is what photography means to me.

It's not just about capturing a great photo that you can hang above your fireplace, it's much more. When I work with a family, I to create an EXPERIENCE they treasure. I want them to look at the images from their session and SEE WHAT I SEE; their emotions, their joy, real life, their connections, the BEAUTY of *THEIR* STORY.

No books this time, but those pillows sure came in handy!

Thank you, [B] family, for a *very* SWEET session!

XOXO Amber

A Day in the LIFE // Roberts FAMILY This blog post will probably be one of the hardest to articulate and most likely one of my longest, because of its precious content...I'm sure tears will be shed while writing. And probably some laughter, too. Because these adorable, sweet little humans and their parents are deeply special to me. They are dear friends; friends defined as: FAMILY that you CHOOSE. Our paths crossed over 5 years ago, when we met at Church. Naomi and I would spend many an afternoon at the local Chick-Fil-A playplaces while our littles climbed around, making memories and becoming great friends, too. Soon, our husbands joined in the friendship as we all realized our great love of late-night games like Cribbage and Rook. AND laughing to tears. Okay, and lots of snacking, too!!

Two years ago, a new chapter in our friendship began, when Jeff took advantage of an incredible job opportunity in Alaska. And so began an adventure of a lifetime for the Roberts Family...our hearts were certainly sad, but how could we be upset when greatness was before them?! Having visited them in Alaska last year and again just recently (it's a tradition now!), I have witnessed Jeff and Naomi and their 5 girls overflowing with a perfect peace and contentment. I personally know how hard being away from family is, but Alaska truly is a perfect fit for them as they are working hard and building a wonderful, joyful life for their family. Despite the change in distance and miles and a even a time zone, our friendships have endured. Sure, we don't talk on the phone every day (or even weekly or monthly for that matter...I'm awful at keeping in touch, just ask my family!!) or get to hang out doing everyday things like chatting over fast food. We don't play card games every weekend or go get sushi just because or quote Brain Regan jokes incessantly. My heart hurts missing those good times. They are memories I will forever cherish. BUT, we are STILL making memories. When we do take the time in our busy lives to connect, and when we are blessed to visit each other (Naomi surprised me in April, when I came home from a shoot and she was at my house!!), we start back up right where we left off. I feel like no matter where we are, I *always* have a best friend <insert tears>...

Last year during our visit to Alaska, I was thrilled to offer outdoor mini-sessions to several families in the area. It helped off-set traveling costs and I was stoked to photograph on the breathtaking backdrop that is Alaska. Our trip this year wasn't finalized until last-minute so I wasn't able to do mini-sessions, but nevertheless, brought my gear to at least do a family session with Naomi & Jeff and their family! Naomi said she just wanted pictures of the girls, we didn't have a time scheduled, and sooo.....on my second morning there, as I witnessed the family's morning unfold, I felt inspired to start photographing these everyday moments.  And so, my dream of capturing a "Day-in-the-Life" session began... These sweet girls are the epitome of everything wonderful, pure, and magical about childhood...below, Samantha is sitting at her desk, brainstorming deep in thought as she and her sisters work on a very special "play" to perform together. I loved listening to them talk endlessly about who was in charge of decorating, how Courtney would be the cat, what dresses they would wear, and much more!

Later, Courtney was oblivious to me taking pictures, as she played alone in her room contentedly, deep in imagination, with some of her toy friends. It is probably the most tangibly I've ever felt my own memories trying to resurface, as my mom has always told me she'd watch me just like this, playing and talking to my toys! I am grateful for the beautiful, carefree wonder we can see if we but only take the time and quietly observe through the eyes of a child...  There is SO much to love and admire about Naomi, but one of my favorite things about her is the energetic, always teaching, hands-on mommy she is. She constantly reminds me of the quote: "Motherhood is not a hobby, it is a calling...It is not something you do if you can squeeze in the time, it is what God gave you time FOR." (Elder Neal L. Andersen) Meanwhile, as dinner was being prepared, I caught these two monkeys sliding down the handrail of the stairs!!

Helping out is something each of the Roberts girls knows is expected of them; I was impressed with how happily they all seemed to obey when asked to vacuum or sweep the floor or put things away.

The girls were SO proud of and excited to show me the raspberry bushes in their backyard. If it was quiet in the house, we knew the girls must be busy picking OR eating raspberries, YUM!

Maddy is an incredible BIG sister, she shines in the opportunity to be a leader and an example. She doesn't take this responsibility lightly either, as she completely adores and is even protective of her little sisters! As extraordinary of a mother Naomi is, Jeff certainly matches her in his role of father. Truly, they work together hand-in-hand, each giving not 50/50%, but EACH giving 100% to be an incredible team! Together they are adoring, teaching, loving, and raising the happiest of girls!! if it's possible to capture the JOY that motherhood brings, I hope I was able to, if even a fraction, in the image below: Can you believe this smile EVEN at bedtime?!! Ally is one of the happiest little girls I've ever known, I adore her smile. And THOSE CHEEKS. Kissable, squeezable cheeks!! (and YES, this really was bedtime even though it appears to be daytime by the window light...the sun wasn't setting until about 10:30/11PM while we were there, crazy!!) more childhood imagination...making "smoothies" outside!! CHEERS! and a FORT of course!!!

This was one of my FAVORITE fun moments- I am in awe and amazement of moms that do their girls' hair every day!; my TWO girls are lucky if they get a brush through their hair and maybe even a ponytail!! Not Naomi...she delights in taking the time to do a special hair style for each of her daughters. EVERY DAY. SO cute!! This hair-do party doubled as a dance-and-singing-party, too so it was a blast! I love Courtney jamming out with her comb-microphone hahaha!!! Look at all beauty in this image...Naomi is beautiful on the inside and out; proud of her sweet, determined, capable, tenacious young daughters. She is strong, enthusiastic, nurturing, dedicated to and mindful of, even *consecrated* to her calling as a busy, young momma. How I LOVE this crew!!

One of the last images I took. I wonder what Naomi is thinking. The word MOTHER has become even more sacred and meaningful to her in the last few months. In May, halfway through her 6th pregnancy, she and Jeff anxiously anticipated finding out the gender of their baby. They were shattered and heartbroken when the ultrasound technician could not find the baby's heartbeat. That night, Naomi, among a rollercoaster of unimaginable emotions, endured the physical labor and delivery of the baby boy she had hoped for and dreamed of for so long, but now, would never bring home. Despite having photographed many babies with Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep, babies who are born still or never go home from the hospital, I felt inadequate as Naomi and I talked on the phone during her labor. My heart ached to be there for her. To offer a long embrace in attempt to express the deepest sympathy that words cannot define. The distance between us made this an impossibility, so instead I simply listened and expressed my love for her and her family and my faith in her strength, which I know is rooted deeply in a Perfect and Eternal Plan. Naomi has since told me that "God doesn't give you more than you can handle, He helps you handle what He gives you." What a perfect reminder that even in our darkest, most excruciating and painful hour, we are NOT alone. In addition to Our Father in Heaven and Our Savior, I know that Jacob isn't far from you, my friend. Jacob's spirit is near and he certainly is in your heart and in the hearts of your family and friends. He lived within your womb and he is and always will be with you and a part of your family.

Thank you for allowing me to document this chapter in your life, my dear friend. We adore you and your family and love you all to the moon and back! In addition to being the hardest few months, your life has been crazy busy, with your most recent move into your new house and with being a momma of 5 busy, energetic (and sometimes dramatic!) little ones!! That is why it is my hope that these images can help time stand still, so that when you look at these images, at this chapter in your life, now and in years to come, you can remember vividly and fondly, those precious, fleeting, everyday memories and moments that have helped mold you and your family into who you are...much love and huge (((HUGS)))

XOXOXO ~ Amber

CONGRATULATIONS, Jared & Lindsay [Littleton wedding photography] I was lucky enough to have a really dear friend ask me to take some photos at her son's reception...Jared and his beautiful bride Lindsay were married in Washington DC the previous week, then traveled to Colorado to celebrate with friends here. As thrilled as I was at the opportunity to capture the reception itself, I admittedly became giddy when I had the chance to photograph the newlyweds together, even though I'm sure they had plenty of photos taken in DC! That's what happens when you are gorgeous, in love, and photogenic...I'm glad they were up for it!!

THANK you for allowing me to capture part of this exciting new chapter for you, Jared & Lindsay!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!

miss [D] turns 2 [Colorado lifestyle family and child photographer] The last time I got to photograph this sweetie was when she turned ONE...where did the last year go?!! Yesterday, I was thrilled to capture her 2 year milestone, right on her birthday!! TWO is such a fun, albeit SUPER BUSY age- one of my favorites to capture, though, because I simply get to do my thing, following my little subject around and documenting the world as they see it!! miss [D] made that a blast, with her animated personality- complete with the cutest, exaggerated, and spirited expressions! I was amazed at how talkative she was too, and WOW, this girl knows what she wants and SHE. WANTS. TO. SWWWIIINNNNGGG!!

*finally* getting to play on the swings, miss [D] giggled the best belly giggles while playing with momma & daddy! Capturing these moments are my favorite!

THANKS for allowing me to be a part of your BIG day, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, cute girl!!

the [A] FOREVER family [Colorado child and family photographer] I just ADORE this cute family and feel so blessed to call them my amazing FRIENDS! We had a wonderful time visiting, being silly, and capturing some moments at one of their favorite places, the Denver LDS temple. Here, Chantrie designs the landscaping and has been working tirelessly for over a week solid planting hundreds of beautiful flowers. For our session, it was looking quite beautiful and I can't wait to see the finished results!! Great work, my friend :)

miss [Q] took a little while to warm up to the camera, but when she did, it was pretty much nonstop smiles, giggles, and being silly!

LOVE this sweet mommy moment with miss [K]...probably one of her most authentic smiles, her momma sure makes her happy <3 miss [M] has the most incredible BIG blue eyes that light up when she smiles...I could photograph those eyes all day!!

In addition to that, their wedding day was filled with elegant details and sweet moments that we truly swooned over and were honored to document! Not even the pouring rain in Morrison and blizzard-like snow in Genesee could dampen their spirits, we were so grateful they allowed us to capture it all!! Mindy + Justin WEDDING DAY [Colorado wedding photography, Denver LDS Temple] Meet Mindy & Justin...A couple years ago, I was blessed to have the opportunity to photograph Mindy's brother's wedding, so when Mindy's mom contacted me about her daughter's wedding, I was thrilled to work with this wonderful family again!! Since Mindy & Justin attend BYU-Idaho, we actually didn't even meet until their wedding day! That didn't hinder us from capturing some great family formal shots as well as some incredibly sweet newlywed moments!! It truly didn't matter that we'd only just met, Mindy & Justin, comfortable in each other's arms and so much in love, did their thing while I stepped back and captured it all...photographing people in LOVE is a pretty amazing thing!

Lacy & Allen ENGAGED! [Colorado wedding photographer] No matter how many couples I meet, I am always captivated by each couple's love story. It is such an awesome experience to get to know two people and capture a glimpse of that special, unique bond they share as they look forward to the amazing journey they face together hand in hand. I am so grateful that Lacy & Allen have allowed me this honor!! When we met a few weeks ago to discuss their June wedding, I immediately felt like I was in the company of good friends. And their engagement session was a continuation of was great getting to know them better, not only in talking and visiting with them, but also as I captured them interacting together, their hearts perfectly matched and overflowing with the joy and serenity that easily happens when you are with your soulmate. Not only THAT, they know how to make each other laugh...and I'm pretty sure they may have been laughing at me a little too, but what can I say...when in the company of good friends, I can say and do some pretty random things hahaha!!! THANK YOU for a WONDERFUL session, you two!! I hope you enjoy this sneak peek...and that you are even *more* excited for your wedding day, because I DEFINITELY AM!!
